ScreamRide Releases March 3rd on Both Xbox One & Xbox 360

Thrills, Spills, Chills, and Epic Combos in ScreamRide

The team at Frontier Developments has an amazing pedigree when it comes to coasters and amusement parks. This is the team behind Kinect Disneyland Adventures and the Roller Coaster Tycoon series, after all; nobody is more knowledgeable about awesome coaster games than these guys. So it’s no surprise to find that ScreamRide is an awesome, bombastic game which will bring massive coasters, thrill rides, and wanton destruction together when it releases for Xbox One and Xbox 360 on March 3.

It’s set in a not-too-distant future where everyone has become bored and people need to be thrilled to near-death. That’s where you come in – with giant rides to astound, amaze, and usually topple a building or two.

There are three types of mission levels in ScreamRide, and each one highlights one of the three pillars of this insane game. ScreamRider missions task you with controlling the coaster, trying to create the most intense experience for the riders without throwing them off the track. You control the speed of the car as well as its lean, which allows you to balance up on two wheels for some dangerous-but-rewarding combos. It’s a very arcade-style system, complete with global and friends leaderboards to encourage some healthy competition.

The Engineer missions make up the puzzle portion of the game. Starting with a piece of a finished coaster, it’s up to you to complete the ride – trying to make the coolest coaster with a limited amount of track.

And finally, there’s Demolition Expert. This is where the “destroy” part of ScreamRider comes in. Using differently shaped ride pods, you launch thrill-seeking guests into a destructible environment, setting off explosions and causing chain reactions to knock down as many buildings as possible.

One of the cool things about ScreamRide is that all three pillars of the game are present to some degree in each mode. For example, destruction and chaos are always a part of the game. Heck, in Engineer mode, you can build a coaster that hits an exploding barrel and collapses a skyscraper!

Of course, the particularly enticing part of ScreamRide is the opportunity to design your own roller coaster or thrill ride from scratch. Frontier Developments has made the biggest, most robust coaster creation system we’ve ever seen; hundreds of pieces, fine-tuned controls, and an incredible amount of customization options let you create the coaster of your dreams, and then share it with the world.

Plus, unlike coaster creation games of years past, you’re not making this ride in a vacuum. ScreamRide has construction tools similar to Minecraft, empowering you to make massive, fully destructible environments. Seeing the set pieces that people build their coasters around is often as cool as checking out the coaster itself.

Keep your hands inside the ride at all times!

Microsoft HoloLens

Forza Horizon 2 getting standalone Fast & Furious expansion

'Forza' creators revving up 'Fast & Furious' video game

"Fast & Furious" and "Forza" are hitching a ride together.

The hugely successful movie franchise is teaming up with the critically acclaimed "Forza" racing series for a video game featuring cars and missions inspired by Universal Pictures' "Fast & Furious" film series. The downloadable title will serve as an expansion to "Forza Horizon 2," the latest open-world edition of Turn 10 Studios' "Forza Motorsport" game franchise.

"We've been talking with the folks at Turn 10 for a number of years and have always wanted to work together," said Bill Kispert, executive vice president of digital licensing at "Fast & Furious" studio Universal. "It was a matter of schedules, capacity and a film coming together at the right time. It finally has, and we're excited to collaborate with Turn 10."

"Forza Horizon 2 Presents Fast & Furious" will launch March 27 for Xbox One and Xbox 360. The stand-alone title will not require "Forza Horizon 2" and will be available for free until April 10 to promote the April 3 release of "Furious 7," the latest installment in the film series. After that date, the "Fast & Furious"-themed expansion will cost gamers $10.

Set before the movie, the game casts players as a driver in France tasked with sourcing vehicles for mechanic Tej Parker (portrayed by Chris "Ludacris" Bridges in the films and game). The automobiles are virtual renditions of those in the "Fast & Furious" movies, such as the iconic 1970 Dodge Charger R/T driven by Vin Diesel's character Dominic Toretto.

"We weren't interested in doing yet another movie-based game," said Alan Hartman, studio head at Turn 10. "That's not what our franchise is about. When we started talking about this with Universal years ago, it was really about bringing both of our franchise's strengths to the table. We're building on top of everything we've done over the last decade."

Hartman said Universal and the "Fast & Furious" filmmakers provided access to the series' cars, production designs and footage in order to virtually reconstruct them in "Forza Horizon 2." He noted that the vehicles in the "Fast & Furious" expansion would be recreations of cars from the film series - right down to their scratches and customized options.

The game will include such "Furious 7" rides as a 1998 Toyota Supra, 1970 Plymouth Road Runner, 2012 Nissan GT-R, 1970 Plymouth Cuda, 2013 Jeep Wrangler, 2014 Maserati Ghibli S and 2015 Dodge Charger.

While the "Fast & Furious" series has been depicted in a few poorly received console and smartphone games, this partnership is a car pool featuring a couple of dynamos: the "Fast & Furious" film franchise has made more than $2.3 billion at the worldwide box office, and "Forza" games are the most-played racing simulations on the current generation of consoles.

"It's kind of been a grand experiment," said Hartman. "I hope what we're doing here is a model for what we do in the future. It's been a great relationship, and I don't want to end it after this, so we'll see what's possible in the future."

Phil Harrison to leave Microsoft

Phil Harrison to leave Microsoft

Executive Phil Harrison is leaving Microsoft, GamesIndustry.biz has learned through multiple sources at GDC, though Microsoft has so far refused to confirm his departure.

"I don't, no. I'm sorry, I don't think I can say anything about that," Xbox boss Phil Spencer told Eurogamer when asked today at GDC. Chris Charla, director of ID@Xbox also refused to comment - with a Microsoft spokesperson stepping in to say Charla wasn't the person to ask about staffing issues, and that the company does not comment on rumour or speculation.

The news comes in tandem with the proposed merger of Lift London, which Harrison was instrumental in founding, with Microsoft's multimedia-focused Soho Productions. Several redundancies are understood to have taken place as part of that move.

Harrison joined Microsoft in 2012 as VP of the Interactive Entertainment Business and EMEA head of games, having previously held a senior role at Sony and founding London Venture Partners in the interim. He was hired by then head of the Xbox business, Don Mattrick, who it's understood had a long standing friendship and mutual respect with Harrison.

"I am excited to be joining the senior team at Microsoft at a pivotal time for our industry," said Harrison when he was hired back in 2012. "I am really impressed with the company's long-term vision for growing the market for interactive entertainment globally and also with the incredible wealth of talent, technology and resources the company has available to succeed."

"We are honoured to have Phil join a team that boasts a wealth of talent from across the industry," added Phil Spencer at the time. "Phil is one of video gaming's true visionaries, and his experience overseeing global studios and deep industry relationships make him the ideal person to lead our European efforts. Under his leadership, we look forward to continuing cultivating the best talent and growing our business in the region."

However, GamesIndustry.biz understands that Harrison grew frustrated when Mattrick's departure and Spencer's subsequent promotion did not result in him moving up the corporate ladder, issuing the ultimatum to Microsoft that he would leave if not offered a new position. However, it seems that no offer was forthcoming, and Harrison has made good on his promise.
