The Spectrum Retreat launches this summer, 11 minutes of gameplay
First-person puzzler The Spectrum Retreat will launch for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Switch, and PC this summer, publisher Ripstone Games announced.
The company also shared an 11-minute gameplay video featuring commentary from game designer Dan Smith, who details the Penrose Hotel and its color-coded puzzles, showing how the basic color-swapping mechanics learned early on become more complex later. It also hints at the narrative arc of the game.
Here is a brief overview of The Spectrum Retreat, via Ripstone Games:
The Spectrum Retreat takes place in the near future at The Penrose hotel, a peaceful yet unsettling refuge from the outside world. As a valued guest, your existence is embedded into the corridors and guest rooms of The Penrose. Through exploration of the striking art-deco hotel you will begin to uncover the mysteries of both The Penrose and the uncertainties surrounding your current stay. Your desire to unearth the truth is obstructed by an array of color-coded first-person puzzles, mind-bending physics challenges and the growing fear of exposing your true intentions.
Named after a real-world phenomenon where players’ brains are so engrossed that images of the iconic falling Tetrimino blocks (i.e. the Tetris playing pieces) linger in their vision, thoughts, and even dreams, Tetris Effect amplifies this magical feeling of total immersion by surrounding you with fantastic, fully three-dimensional worlds that react and evolve based on how you play. Music, backgrounds, sounds, special effects—everything, down to the Tetris pieces themselves, pulse, dance, shimmer, and explode in perfect sync with how you’re playing.
From deep beneath the ocean to the furthest reaches of outer space and everywhere between, Tetris Effect’s 30-plus stages take players on a wondrous, emotional journey through the universe. The core of the game is still Tetris—one of the most popular puzzle games of all time—but like you’ve never seen it, or heard it, or felt it before.
Play it on either a PS4 and standard display, or up to 4K and 60fps on a PS4 Pro, or optionally in mind-blowing 3D via PS VR!
Key Features
• Get in the Zone – Includes the all-new “Zone” mechanic, where players can stop time (and Tetriminos falling) by entering “the Zone” and either get out of a sticky situation that could otherwise lead to “Game Over,” or rack up extra line clears for bonus rewards.
• Level Up – Over 30 different stages, each with its own music, sound effects, graphical style and background that all evolve and change as you play through them.
• PS4 or PS4 Pro (and optional PS VR!) – Fully playable on either a standard display (up to 4K and 60fps on a PS4 Pro), or optionally in mind-blowing 3D on PS VR.
• Play Your Way – Fan-favorite modes like Marathon, Sprint, and Ultra, with more all-new modes and other features to be revealed before launch.
• Timeless. Endless. – A player grading and leveling system as well as variable difficulty to encourage and reward replayability.

Futuristic combat racer GRIP launches this fall
Futuristic combat racing game GRIP will launch for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Switch, and PC via Steam this fall, publisher Wired Productions announced.
GRIP is currently available on Steam Early Access.
Here is an overview of the game, via Wired Productions:
Members of the original team behind the classic arcade combat racer, Rollcage have come together with fans to celebrate the re-emergence of blindingly fast arcade racers, offering a true, wheel-gripping racing experience – where utter destruction serves one true purpose: be the first to cross the finish line.
“It’s a dream come true to once again find myself working on another great racing project” said Robert Baker, principal programmer for GRIP and former lead programmer at Rollcage’s developer, Attention to Detail. “There are so many elements to GRIP that take me back, and I love the true racing experience that Rollcage and now GRIP both deliver. GRIP is truly poised to be the spiritual successor to the Rollcage games of the late 90s that so many people loved playing.”
Taking full advantage of the current generation of gaming hardware, GRIP accelerates ahead of the racing crowd by offering players speeds of over 767 mph – making it the fastest racing game on four wheels, across roads, ceilings and anything else players can land their tires on to. The game will benefit from the enhanced power behind the PlayStation 4 Pro and Xbox One X, delivering eye-pleasing visuals with spectacular in-game physics and harnessing the potential that comes from building with Unreal Engine 4.
GRIP will see racers speeding their way around 19 breathtaking tracks across a variety of hostile and foreign worlds. Remaining focused on the task at hand, players must be merciless in their quest to cross the finish line; deploying an arsenal of 11 devastating weapons and power-ups to give them the advantage to take the lead against fierce competitors. From explosive darts, mines, and missiles to shields and turbos, these weapons will allow players to not only target other cars, but the environment surrounding them – blasting their way through structures or collapsing them unexpectedly onto unsuspecting opponents.
Racers can pick from a roster of 15 armored cars, some swift and agile, while others are brutish and heavily armored. Modifying further to suit their style, players can also customize each vehicle with an array of varied paint jobs, decals, wheels and other details. More information about the game’s cars, tracks, weapons and other modes – including Carkour and Arena – will be detailed by Wired Productions later this year.

J.J. Abrams' Bad Robot banner has expanded into the gaming space.
Company president and COO Brian Weinstein announced Thursday that the entertainment production company has entered a strategic relationship with Tencent, the Chinese media giant, to form Bad Robot Games. The partnership will exclusively develop games by Abrams and Bad Robot, with Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment joining the gaming arm as a minority investor.
Bad Robot Games will partner with established developers to create large-scale and indie titles for the mobile, PC and console markets. In-house visual artists, designers and writers from Bad Robot will work on the projects.
