When I was in the UK staying with my host family, I told my host mom that I really liked potato chips. The next day, I had fries as a side dish for dinner. Then only I remembered chips mean fries in the UK. Since then, I have been very conscious of the differences between British and American English.
These are some examples that are more commonly used.
However, of course, vocabulary is not the only difference between British and American English. Are you craving and hungry for learning more?

This is actually a common process in learning languages - over-generalization. We often overgeneralize not only the pronunciation but also the grammar rules.
That is why we need an instructor/a teacher/a tutor to guide us.
