Lockout Unveiled as the Fifth Re-Imagined Multiplayer Map for Halo: The Master Chief Collection

Lockout is the fifth of six classic Halo 2 multiplayer maps being re-imagined for Halo: The Master Chief Collection, joining the previously announced Ascension, Coagulation, Zanzibar and Sanctuary.

Set in an old Forerunner research laboratory in the frigid mountains of Delta Halo, Lockout features fast-paced, close quarters combat with its narrow corridors and vertical level design. With three levels to navigate, adept players can deftly traverse around the map by mastering specific jumping points, enabling them to secure power weapons faster and set up ambushes for unsuspecting opponents.

The re-imagined version of Lockout also includes a few new features that will surprise even the most hardened Halo 2 veterans.

“Lockout was hands-down the most popular small arena-style map in Halo 2,” said Max Hoberman, president of Certain Affinity and one of the original lead designers of Halo 2.

“We're thrilled to be bringing this fan-favorite back, and are paying close attention to the details and subtleties that made the original great while also making a couple of very careful, very calculated enhancements. Most prominent among these are a bit of cover added to the ‘Elbow,’ the long walkway connecting the grav lift to the sniper tower, and a dynamic element that should help counter an entrenched group of enemies. Of course this can be disabled in Forge for players who want a near-match of the original experience.”

If you’re visiting PAX Prime in Seattle, WA (Aug. 29 – Sept. 1), Lockout will be playable at the Xbox Booth (#412, #422, #432), where 16 stations will be available for attendees to try out Halo: The Master Chief Collection’s multiplayer.

Throughout the weekend, 343 Industries will be hosting a number of activities for the Halo community, including a Halo: The Master Chief Collection panel, a developer signing, and the Halo PAX Prime Showdown - a weekend long tournament where fans can qualify and compete for $10,000 in prizes. The tournament will be broadcast live on the Halo Twitch channel.

Hey there Halo fans!

It’s been a long, crazy, exciting road, and we’re finally getting close to launch of Halo: The Master Chief Collection in November. I wanted to personally share some big status updates with you. Let’s start with the biggest:

Halo: The Master Chief Collection has gone GOLD!

This is a massive milestone for the team and also means that the game will be available for Pre-Order and Pre-Download later today. I couldn’t be more excited to start having fans grab this game online so everyone can hit the ground running on release day! The team has been working incredibly hard to make this happen, so we’re all eager for you to play this labor of love.

One of the questions we get asked most is about worldwide release plans. The reality of worldwide sales and retail processes always makes simultaneous launches challenging. Some fans expressed disappointment in our original planned release date of November 11 in North America and November 14 in several other territories around the world. We heard you loud and clear, and I am happy to announce that Halo: The Master Chief Collection will be released on November 11 for the majority of our fans around world!

There are still a few countries that will see a slight delay due to public holidays. In Europe, Belgium will release on November 12 and France will release on November 14 as part of their typical Friday release schedule. Our fans in Japan will see a release of November 13. Given the social aspects of the experience, we were really happy to get it as close to a simultaneous worldwide release as possible so that we can all celebrate on November 11 and start playing together.

This is literally going to be the biggest Halo experience so far

That is to say, the sheer size and scope of the content. To recap, Halo: The Master Chief Collection contains four complete Halo games, every multiplayer map ever released (including DLC from console and PC) across each game, a complete remaster of Halo 2 with all-new audio and Blur’s mind-blowing cinematics, and all of this is tied together with (and enhanced by) a revolutionary user interface.

From the start, our philosophy has been to give Halo fans the best possible experience and not compromise the quality or features of the collection. The result is that Halo: The Master Chief Collection will take up almost all of the usable space of a single Blu-ray (45 GB), and we will also issue a content update at launch that is estimated to be 20 GB. You’ll be able to start playing Campaign and more as the content is installing, with some features and multiplayer content being added via the update. Yes, the update is large, but we weren’t about to cut corners to save disc space. This ensures that you are getting every bit of Halo goodness we can fit in. Our work is not done, however, as we continue to tune, tweak and optimize the online experience to ensure a smooth multiplayer launch. This will continue right up until launch day.

One caveat we wanted to share is that Spartan Ops, our episodic co-op experience from Halo 4, will now release in December. In the meantime, we’re making some technical enhancements to that experience to make sure it’s smoother and even better than before. All ten episodes will be available at the same time, so we’re working to make an event out of it with our Community teams.

No team has really attempted a project like this, and the number of moving pieces has been staggering. HaloFest: A Celebration Fit for a Spartan

Halo: The Master Chief Collection is Microsoft and 343 Industries’ tribute to longtime fans, the culmination of more than 13 years of storytelling, adventure and gameplay. For the first HaloFest, 343 built a living museum of Halo history, but this time, the history is encapsulated in its purest form, the Master Chief’s epic saga. So this year, in celebration of those memories and the future that lies ahead, Halo will take over the Avalon Theatre in Los Angeles on Nov. 10, the day before Halo: The Master Chief Collection arrives worldwide.

Fans all over the world are invited to join the festivities via a live broadcast on Xbox Live, Xbox.com and Twitch, beginning at 8 p.m. PT. Tune in to the HaloFest Livestream to see:

• First look at Halo 5: Guardians. Fans will have a chance to experience the Halo 5: Guardians Multiplayer Beta before its release on Dec. 29. An exhibition match between eSports pros will provide a first glimpse at the future of Halo multiplayer gameplay.

• World premiere of Halo: Nightfall. The evolution of Halo storytelling continues with the debut of Halo: Nightfall. Watch the first episode of this original live-action digital series, which introduces Agent Locke – a pivotal new character in Halo 5: Guardians. Halo: Nightfall is the result of an unprecedented collaboration with industry talents like Ridley Scott and Sergio Mimica-Gezzan, who worked hand-in-hand with 343 Industries to raise the bar for live-action storytelling in the Halo universe.

Hear from Head of 343 Industries Bonnie Ross, Franchise Development Director Frank O’Connor, Executive Producer Dan Ayoub, Executive Producer Josh Holmes and others as they talk about the past, present and future of the Halo universe. Additionally, get the latest details on Halo: Nightfall directly from 343 Executive Producer Kiki Wolfkill, the cast and production team, and hear from celebrity Halo fans walking the green carpet at the Avalon Theatre.

• The global Halo Tournament. On Nov. 8-9, the Halo: The Master Chief Collection Launch Invitational, presented by ESL, will feature 32 of the biggest names in eSports going toe-to-toe in Halo 2: Anniversary multiplayer for $50,000 in prizes and the chance to be the first to play the Halo 5: Guardians Multiplayer Beta. The competition will take place at ESL’s Southern California headquarters, and all coverage will be streamed at Twitch.tv/Halo on Nov. 8-9, with additional highlights airing during the HaloFest live broadcast on Nov. 10.

When 343 Industries set out to create Halo: The Master Chief Collection, they faced a unique challenge. A decade after the original release of Halo 2, fans of the Halo franchise held a special place in their hearts for the title. As the team at 343 celebrated the franchise’s rich history and the evolving story of the Master Chief, another story began to unfold – the story of how 343 Industries and their partners around the world would work to bring Halo 2 to a new generation while honoring its fabled past.

“How do you remake a title that is so beloved by fans? How do you decide what must stay the same and what can be updated? It takes an army to build any game and we realized this process was one that the Halo Nation rarely gets a glimpse into,” said Tina Summerford, Director of Programming for 343 Industries. “We hit the road to capture the process from top to bottom, talking to all of the key players who helped bring Halo 2: Anniversary into the next gen and giving our fans unprecedented access to this process.”

Throughout the game’s development 343 Industries travelled the world, capturing the perspectives of 343’s expansive team of creative partners, Halo fans, pro players, and industry experts to tell the story behind the story millions know and love. With over four-hundred hours of footage and more than 80 interviews, they had what they needed to complete their story.

“We made some pretty important discoveries along the way,” said Summerford. “As we got deeper into the project, we realized we couldn't talk about Halo 2’s impact on the industry without telling the story of Halo’s origins. It’s pretty awesome to hear the original team from Bungie talk about the beginning of this franchise and it’s something we think both new and old fans will appreciate”.

The documentary includes never-before-seen story elements and footage from Halo 2: Anniversary and features interviews with high-profile Halo contributors Bonnie Ross, Frank O'Connor, Dan Ayoub, and Phil Spencer, as well as members of the original Halo 2 team - writer Joseph Staten, multiplayer designer Max Hoberman, and composer Marty O'Donnell. It also goes behind-the-scenes with the many artistic contributors on the title, including voice actor Keith David and guitar legend Steve Vai.

And now, starting on October 31, Halo fans around the world will have their first chance to see the complete documentary chronicling this incredible journey. Halo 2’s Iconic Coagulation Map Gets a Masterful Makeover

As any Halo fan will tell you, the original Halo: Combat Evolved’s Blood Gulch – and its Halo 2 remake, Coagulation – is the quintessential, experience-defining Halo multiplayer map. And beyond that, it’s also one of the most iconic first-person shooter play fields of all-time. For the upcoming Halo: The Master Chief Collection, the map is part of the Halo 2: Anniversary selection – but rather than just bringing the original Halo 2 version of Coagulation to The Master Chief Collection, 343 Industries partnered with Certain Affinity to remake it (along with five other Halo 2 maps) from the ground up, making it bigger, better, and deadlier than ever before.

The remade version of the iconic Coagulation is called Bloodline, and features a number of changes to keep things fresh. It’s like a “Best Of” collection for all the iterations of Blood Gulch. Longtime players will note new additions, like the UNSC Hornets from Halo 3 behind each base and a small bridge to the side that offers new areas of cover for players attacking it.

Of course, Bloodline is still a sandbox Halo playground, and vehicles are a huge part of that. Consequently, the addition of an EMP at each base works as a defense against the inevitable Warthogs and Hornets zooming in for the kill. And if two bases isn’t enough for you, Bloodline even features a midfield base – complete with Banshee and Warthog, ensuring lots more hectic mayhem in the canyon.

New and old Halo players alike will find much to love about the new Bloodline. It takes the best elements of Blood Gulch and Coagulation and throws in some new additions that keep the map feeling fresh, while still sparkling with plenty of Halo nostalgia.

Halo: The Master Chief Collection makes its exclusive Xbox One debut on November 11, and features plenty of other Halo 2 multiplayer favorites, including Ascension, Lockout, Sanctuary, Warlock, and Zanzibar. Heck yeah!
