Online publication iafrica has posted Sony’s announcement for Gran Turismo 6 – a bit early, we assume. It will be launching on the PlaySation 3 this holiday.

Sony’s press release says that the racer “will bring new levels of authenticity to ‘the Real Driving Simulator’ as well as introducing stunning new tracks and cars and a revised user interface.” It will also states, “A new compact game engine will improve operation and increase the flexibility to expand it with downloadable content.” Gran Turismo 6 will be compatible with smartphones as well as tables to enhance the social and community features.

Gran Turismo 5′s cars and tracks are returning for GT6. However, the car list will exceed 1,2000 at launch thanks to the additions to the line-up of historic cars, road cars and the latest race cars, and even more cars will be distributed online.

Thousands of aerodynamic parts and custom wheels will be included for almost all cars. Gran Turismo 6 will also be able to personalize custom cars.

Moving on to tracks, the Silverstone Circuit is one of seven new locations in Gran Turismo 6. The area total will stand at 33, with 71 different layouts available. 19 are new. New tracks will also be made available online, and the course maker has been improved.

Sony will once again be teaming up with Nissan as the two companies search for real racing drivers in the GT Academy series. Additionally, partnerships with tire manufacturer Yokohama Rubber and suspension company KW Automotive have been formed for Gran Turismo 6′s development.

Kazunori Yamauchi said of the announcement:

“It is amazing to think that it is 15 years since we first released Gran Turismo. Things have changed a lot since then and now Gran Turismo 6 is a further evolution of my dream. We’re pleased to deliver GT6 to PlayStation 3 as we have a very loyal community on that platform.”

The European PlayStation Twitter account has been live-tweeting from the Gran Turismo 15th anniversary event where Gran Turismo 6 was officially announced. Details shared include:

- Game engine has been renewed
- Will be smoother
- Rendering engine renewed
- Revamped physics engine
- New suspension
- New tire and aerodynamics modeling
- GT6 cars will look much more true to life
- 200 more cars than GT5
- More cars after launch
- 33 locations, 71 course layouts and new tracks every months via DLC
- New Course Maker, spanning several tens of square kilometers
- Organize and form your own racing communities
- Organize your own championships
