Hellblade Revealed for PS4, Developed by Ninja Theory

Hi, my name is Dom Matthews and I’m the Product Development Ninja at Ninja Theory. It’s a great pleasure to be posting on PlayStation.Blog to tell you about our new game Hellblade, which has just been announced at the PlayStation Gamescom press conference.

For those who aren’t aware of Ninja Theory, we are the UK based developer that created DmC: Devil May Cry, Enslaved: Odyssey to the West, and PS3 exclusive Heavenly Sword.

Over the course of the last 14 years we’ve developed three key strengths that define our games: ninja-class combat, strong character stories, and a unique art vision. In our new digital game, Hellblade, we want to take these three key strengths to the next level. Hellblade will be an experience focused on delivering a deep character in a twisted world, with brutal uncompromising combat.

We’re calling Hellblade an “Independent AAA” game, by which we mean that it will be developed and published independently but with all the quality and production values of any AAA game on the market.

Why have we chosen to self-publish this game? Certain types of game are very difficult to make for AAA retail without being watered down or otherwise compromised for a mass audience. This is especially true of sword-based combat games or games of a distinctive style or unusual subject matter. We want to make a smaller, more focused game experience that is uncompromising in its combat, art and story, and deliver this digitally at a lower price.

The announcement trailer that we’ve just released is intended to give you a taste of the AAA quality that we’re planning on delivering, and to also introduce you to the Hellblade world, which is based on Celtic myth. The trailer is focused on Senua, Hellblade’s protagonist as she embarks on a very personal journey through a hellish underworld.

We have announced the game unusually early. This is a deliberate move: we want to share our development journey with you, the fans; to develop Hellblade right in front of your eyes so you can see just how we go about making games.

At the heart of this is hellblade.com, where you can find the latest from development. Throughout the project we’ll be sharing developer diaries, concept art, design documents, tutorials and work-in-progress of the game being put together. If you hop over to Hellblade.com now you’ll see some concept art from Hellblade as well as an introduction video to the project. You’ll also see a lot more information about “Independent AAA”, and in the spirit of openness, we’ve posted a lot of documentation on a couple of Ninja Theory games that were planned, but never made it into production.

To finish my post, I want to say that it is incredibly exciting for me and the team at Ninja Theory to be creating Hellblade. Hellblade is being made for our fans. Fans of Heavenly Sword, Enslaved and DmC: Devil May Cry. If any of our games have found a special place in your heart, then our aim is that Hellblade will too.

Ninja Theory 新作《地狱之刃》曝光在未知世界展开血腥杀戮

曾开发《玄天神剑(Heavenly Sword)》、《DmC:恶魔猎人》与《幻想西游记(Enslaved)》的游戏研发商Ninja Theory 今日稍早在索尼于德国Gamescon 的展前发表会上,首度公开了旗下开发的最新原创游戏《地狱之刃(暂译,英文原名:Hellblade)》,并同步释出游戏影片。

影片中的女主角是名为Senua 的异族女子,带有强烈执念的她,在一场神秘的祈祷仪式中进入了未知世界,而来自地狱的怪物们,正向着她步步逼近.....

Ninja Theory 表示本作是一款独立开发游戏,目标是打造出AAA 等级的内容,玩家将可在扭曲的世界中展开一场场血腥、残酷的战斗。

《地狱之刃》定位独立3A作品 开发不同以往

《天剑》《DMC鬼泣》的开发商忍者理论的员工Dom Matthews在PS博客上发文介绍了在科隆游戏展上公开的《地狱之刃》,以及忍者理论在这次开发中的计划和期待。

十四年来,忍者理论开发的游戏拥有三个强项。1.酷炫的打斗;2.强角色故事;3.艺术的画面。在《地狱之刃》中,忍者理论希望将这三点带到一个新的水平。《地狱之刃》将带来一段聚焦于扭曲世界中深刻角色的体验,以及不妥协的战斗内容。

Dom称《地狱之刃》为“独立3A游戏”,意思是这款游戏的开发和发行都将是独立的,但是产品的质量和价值会是3A的水平。选择自主发行的原因是什么呢?某些类型的游戏不掺水,不向大众用户妥协就很难进行3A的销售。这对于刀剑战斗类游戏,风格独立的游戏或者一些少见的题材是非常现实的。忍者理论希望制作一款规模稍小,更集中于不打折的战斗游戏体验,画面和故事的作品,并且以更低的价格,数字版的形式传达给用户。

《地狱之刃》的世界观基于凯尔特神话,公布的宣传片焦点是故事主角Senua。整个故事讲述的是她在一个危险世界中的旅程。

游戏公开的时间不同寻常的早。这是开发团队深思熟虑的结果。忍者理论将和玩家分享他们的开发过程,让玩家看见开发的过程将有助于游戏本身。

分享的关键就是地狱之刃的官网。官方将在这里发布开发者日志,概念图,设计文档,教材和游戏开发进度等。本着这种开放的精神,忍者理论还计划将过去企划,但没有最终成为作品的项目的大量文件公开出来。

Ninja Theory's Hellblade is coming to PC
Ninja Theory 新作《地狱之刃 Hellblade》确定将登陆 PC 平台


  曾开发《玄天神剑(Heavenly Sword)》、《DmC:恶魔猎人》与《幻想西游记(Enslaved)》的游戏研发商 Ninja Theory 去年 8 月发表 PS4 最新原创游戏《地狱之刃(暂译,英文原名:Hellblade)》,今日官方公告也将推出 PC 版本。

  去年由 Ninja Theory 所宣布的 3A 新作 Hellblade ,原本只有登陆 PS4 的消息,但是在今天在官网上公布了惊喜的消息。

  研发团队指出,「今天我们非常高兴的宣布,除了之前的 PS4 版本,Hellblade 也将登陆 PC 平台。我们很高兴能将 Hellblade 提供给 PC 玩家。」

  另外,研发团队也有提到支持到 4K 画质,以及玩家自行改装 MOD 的可能性。

New Hellblade video shows off a unique approach to performance capture

Hello, Dominic Matthews here from Ninja Theory (@ninjatheory). As a studio we strive to create believable characters that you as a player care about. A week doesn’t go by without us receiving a letter or email from someone telling us that they’ve been moved by our characters. This fills us with a great sense of pride. In Hellblade, our upcoming PlayStation 4 title, we will take you on the harrowing journey Senua; a Celtic warrior plunged into hell. It is important to us that we represent Senua and her story honestly and believably.

Fundamental to our approach is using performance capture to bring our characters to life. Performance capture is a technology that we pioneered in the development of our 2007 PlayStation 3 exclusive Heavenly Sword and one that we are continuing to use, and evolve, in Hellblade.

Today we are sharing a new development diary video focused on Hellblade’s unique performance capture approach. This is the 10th episode in our development diary series, through which we are we are documenting Hellblade’s creation as it happens.

The small glimpse of the cinematic scene that you saw at the end of the development diary is from our Vertical Slice that we are currently busy finalising. Our Vertical Slice is a small section of the game that we are taking to a finished, polished state. It is in the Vertical Slice development phase that we have discovered exactly what the Hellblade experience is, bringing together the results of our prototyping and realising the creative vision in-game for the first time.

We’ll be sharing much more of the Vertical Slice in the next few months, showing Hellblade gameplay for the first time and revealing more about Senua’s story.

Ninja Theory to explore psychosis in new game - Hellblade

Ninja Theory, a Cambridge, UK based independent games developer, announced today that mental health and psychosis are the key themes explored in Hellblade. Inspired by historical events, Hellblade tells the story of Senua, a Celtic warrior who is left traumatised by a Viking invasion. This third person action game, being developed for PlayStation 4 and PC, will follow Senua’s journey into a vision of hell that is the manifestation of her own mental illness.

In order to ensure a sensitive and accurate portrayal of the subject, Ninja Theory has been working closely with Psychiatrist and Professor of Health and Neuroscience from the University of Cambridge, Paul Fletcher, as well as arranging to consult with people who have experience of mental health difficulties.

Paul Fletcher said: “True understanding of mental health is not simply about books, lectures or verbal descriptions but from deeper engagement on all levels. Working with Ninja Theory has shown me the potential that gaming has for sharing in a character's experiences and engendering empathy in ways that go well beyond those offered by simple academic descriptions. Maybe this approach will contribute powerful new ways of challenging stigma.”

Hellblade is being developed by a small team of 15 people under a development model Ninja Theory call Independent AAA. This approach sees the game being created with all the creative freedom of ‘indie’ development, but with the production values of AAA blockbuster games.

Tameem Antoniades, Chief Creative Director at Ninja Theory, said: “In Hellblade we are pursuing creative independence in order to explore a compelling subject matter and gaming experience that would not be possible under the current retail model. In movie terms, this would be a quality independent film, not a Hollywood blockbuster. Digital self-publishing means that we can offer a smaller, but high quality game at around half the price of retail games.”

The project is supported by the Wellcome Trust, a global charitable foundation which aims to build a greater public understanding of science, and in particular health.

Iain Dodgeon, Creative Partnerships Manager at the Wellcome Trust, added: “More and more, games have an exciting and innovative role to play in giving us new perspectives on health and mental health challenges. Rather than being a didactic game teaching us about psychosis, Hellblade allows us to explore it through the creation of a compelling and complex character, and the world that she inhabits.

Hellblade will be available in 2016.

NinjaTheory 声明《地狱之刃(Hellblade)》PC和PS4版同步平台今年内上市

  NinjaTheory的《地狱之刃》早期确定会推出PC版和PS4版,昨天NinjaTheory在推特上确定这两个版本将同期上市。

  虽然还没有具体的发售日期,开发方表示计划在2016年内。《地狱之刃》公布于2014年的gamescom,NinjaTheory 表示这将是一款他们自己负责发行的游戏,将会是一款独立3A作品。NinjaTheory 之前制作过《DMC鬼泣》,《奴役:西游记(Enslaved: Odyssey to the West)》等作品,不缺少大制作的经验。目前官方BLOG已经公布了19期开发者日志。

  《地狱之刃》主要描述女主角 Senua 是名战士,她遭遇到海盗入侵惨剧后心灵留下了创伤,在她脑中不自觉会听到声音,而有着强烈执念。 《地狱之刃》创意长 Tameem Antoniades 今日在 GDC 2016 中 Epic Games 座谈会中,公开了最新《地狱之刃》研发日志影片,并说明 Senua 在影片中的脸部动画是藉由女演员 Melina Juergens 的真实表演产生,藉由实时捕捉技术来直接导入 Unreal Engine 4 中。

Ninja Theory demonstrates Virtual Human in VR with new Stereo 360° Video

Ninja Theory, the UK-based videogame developer has today released their first VR scene to the public in order to demonstrate the potential of Virtual Human technology in VR. The scene, based on the studio’s upcoming game Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice, is available to view as a stereoscopic 360° video on YouTube, Facebook and through Oculus devices.

At Games Developer Conference 16, Ninja Theory showcased a virtual human demonstration in partnership with Epic Games, Cubic Motion & 3Lateral. In a world-first, a scene from their upcoming game, Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice, was performed by an actress live on stage and rendered in the game world in real-time. The studio have today released the same scene in VR.

“We tested the scene in VR and found that people reacted very strongly to seeing someone they perceive as human”, said Tameem Antoniades, Chief Creative Ninja at Ninja Theory, “Our belief is that real-time virtual human technology will profoundly shape future VR experiences for games, movies and beyond.”

Wil Driver, CTO at Ninja Theory added, “In VR, you expect characters to acknowledge your presence in meaningful and natural ways and respond to your actions. In the real-time version of the scene, Senua tracks and follows your eyes procedurally while still playing a captured performance. In future, we believe a mix of live performance capture, procedural animation systems and AI will profoundly change the way we both create and enjoy VR experiences.”

Ninja Theory plan to continue their work with Virtual Human Technology in partnership with Cubic Motion and 3Lateral to explore the possibilities that real-time performance capture and virtual human interaction will bring to VR experiences.

The 360° video can also be viewed in VR with the Google Cardboard viewer via the YouTube Mobile App and with Oculus devices.

  Ninja Theory新作《地狱之刃:赛娜的献祭》或许在名气上还没有那么大,但这款游戏在质量上却已经证明了自己。一起来通过这部新出炉的开发者日记来看一看《地狱之刃:赛娜的献祭》的诸多细节吧。

  在这段视频中,游戏开发者们为玩家带来了不少《地狱之刃:赛娜的献祭》的实战场面,但相比于爽快感,真正值得我们注意的其实是这些实战中细节。与偏重于割草类的动作游戏不同,《地狱之刃:赛娜的献祭》的女主并没有变态的力量或是什么超能力,所以喜欢蛮干莽死对手的玩家在这部游戏里很可能会被一个小怪防反到死。想要赢得战斗,那么我们不得不更多的依靠赛娜的灵敏身手。

  除此之外,《地狱之刃:赛娜的献祭》战斗系统还有几个相当值得点出来的特点,其中之一就是攻击时附带的强度/伤害影响系统。这款游戏中所有的攻击都有相应的环境效果,刀剑互砍时迸发出激烈的金属撞击声顺带一些火花,这样的设定让打击感瞬间提升了一个层次。除此之外,《地狱之刃:赛娜的献祭》中的血量还有一个相当逼真的显示模式,那就是真实伤口。如果你看到对手全身都是割痕而且淤血颇多,那么这就意味着他已经基本快要完蛋了。而赛娜在被敌人严重伤害时也会出现全屏血迹和眩晕效果,相当逼真地模拟了重伤时的状态。

  《地狱之刃:赛娜的献祭》将在近年上市,登陆的平台为PS4以及PC。

Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice Combat Detailed in New Dev Diary

Hello PlayStation fans, Dom here from Ninja Theory. Work continues on our upcoming PlayStation 4 title Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice and today I’m very happy to be sharing with you a new development diary video – Episode 23 in our open development series. In this diary we give an update on Hellblade’s combat gameplay and show new footage of the game in action.

Over the past six weeks or so our small team of 16 people has been focused on taking some big strides forward with the look, feel and sound of Hellblade’s combat gameplay. This has included painstaking work from our combat designer to iterate over and over on the feel of Senua’s moves in battle, the blending of motion-captured stunts with hand-animation to bring through both character and realism in Senua’s movement, and the building of an environment in which to demo Senua’s new skills.

And that’s not to mention the character art, FX, audio, cinematics and programming time that has gone into moving our game’s combat further along the road to completion. We still have a long way to go, but we’re happy with the progress that we’re making.

Hellblade development continues at full speed here at Ninja Theory. As our combat group continues to develop Senua’s combat, the rest of the team are turning their attention to different areas of the game.

We’re regularly shooting scenes for the game in our in-house homemade performance capture studio and we are excited to be continuing our work with a great group of actors that are performing the various voices that Senua hears throughout our journey.

Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice delayed to 2017
独立佳作《地狱之刃:塞娜的献祭》延期至2017年


  今天 Ninja Theory 工作室宣布旗下新作《地狱之刃:塞娜的献祭(Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice)》延期至2017 年。这款游戏是 《DmC:鬼泣》 团队Ninja Theory开发的一款新作,游戏故事以凯尔特神话为背景。主角塞娜踏上了一条犹如地狱般的黑暗之路,在这个异态的世界,塞娜开始了心灵的旅程。游戏将以她的视角来见证这个世界,通过她去寻找隐秘的真相。

  Ninja Theory也解释了导致游戏延期的三个重要原因。首先,开发团队在今年年初的时候取消了一个正在开发的新项目,但此前它已经占用了许多时间。其次,Ninja Theory难得与Epic Games等优秀工作室进行了合作,推进了整个单机游戏行业的技术发展。最后,他们表示《地狱之刃:塞娜的献祭》开发进度没有想象中那么快,而且由于工作室要求比较高,绝不允许游戏有任何质量上的妥协。

Ninja Theory has delayed Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice to 2017. It will release for PlayStation 4 and PC.

In a video update, Ninja Theory cites the following reasons behind the delay:

Earlier in 2016, a project in development at Ninja Theory was cancelled, which took some time to sort out.
Ninja Theory had a rare opportunity to collaborate with Epic Games and others to push performance capture technology forward for the whole video games industry.

Ninja Theory’s progress on Hellblade has not been as fast as it would have liked. One of the reasons it’s creating Hellblade independently is because it puts decisions in the hands of Ninja Theory. Rushing the game out for release or compromising on quality is not something it is willing to entertain.

A final release date is still unannounced.

  Ninja Theory 的动作新作《地狱之刃:塞娜的献祭》(Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice)之前说好的是 2016 年发售,但最终还是跳票到了 2017 年。今天开发商在Twitter上回复了一名玩家的质疑,确认本作将在2017年发售。

  Ninja Theory 称这款新作是一个“独立3A游戏”,最初在2014 年 8 月公布,截止到目前已经开发了相当长的时间。据外媒报导实际上《地狱之刃:塞娜的献祭》 是开发商Ninja Theory 中一个很小的团队在负责,预算也很有限。

  曾经开发过《DMC鬼泣》和《奴役:西游记》(Enslaved: Odyssey to the West)的Ninja Theory,在动作游戏打造上自然得心应手,曾有玩过《地狱之刃:塞娜的献祭》的玩家评价本作的战斗系统很棒。

《地狱之刃:塞娜的献祭》开发日志 已进入Alpha阶段


  《鬼泣:DMC》团队Ninja Theory新作《地狱之刃:塞娜的献祭(Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice)》终于有谱了,Ninja Theory今天发布消息,游戏已经基本开发完成,进入了Alpha阶段,这也是《地狱之刃》第一次可以从头到尾的正常进行游戏,同时还发布了最新的开发日志,其中包含一些游戏实机画面,从人物到环境都突出一个真实的特点。

  不过Ninja Theory表示这并不意味着游戏开发已经结束,如今他们已经完成了整体的区域的布局,确定了设计方向,因为很多部分还处于初级阶段,所以他们还有大量的工作要做,他们已经拍摄了所有的动作捕捉场景,如今需要加入到游戏中,同时他们也采取立体声录制了声音素材,这样随着Senua旅程你将体验到3D环绕的声场。

  另外所有的游戏机制、战斗、解谜等等都已经在一进步测试和打磨中,在经过了两年的努力之后,Ninja Theory表示自己将进入到下一个Beta开发阶段,将开始专注于提升玩家的体验,一步步增加改变整体效果的细节内容,经过Beta阶段之后游戏就将迎来最后的发售准备了,修复bug,优化在各个平台的表现等等。

  Ninja Theory表示他们很兴奋取得如今的成果,期待在今年晚些时候能正式推出游戏,他们也将第一时间他通知给玩家新的消息。

Development Diary 26: Myths & Madness

As we complete our Alpha stage of development for Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice we wanted to share a new development diary with you. Episode 26, Myths & Madness, explores how Senua’s journey is one that is intertwined with both her experiences of psychosis and Viking mythology.

Completing the Alpha stage is significant in Hellblade’s creation. It means that for the first time the entire game is playable from beginning to end. That doesn’t however mean that the game is finished. There is still a huge amount of work to be done across the whole experience. Some parts of the game are starting to look and feel just as we envisaged, whereas others are still only built to a basic level. The important thing at this stage is that all of the areas are laid out and the design clearly defined. Two years of hard work by the Hellblade team is starting to pay off and we’re ready for the next stage: Beta. This is where we can focus on the player experience – looking at the game step-by-step, improving it along the way, honing how the game will look and feel to our players. It is at this stage that we will start to add a lot of the small details that make a big difference.

We’re very excited to be sharing Hellblade with you later this year and we look forward to bringing you more updates on the road to release.

Ninja Theory has released a new trailer for Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice and confirmed the game will be enhanced for PlayStation 4 Pro.

Users with PlayStation 4 Pro will be able to choice between experiencing Hellblade with enhanced resolution or at a higher frame rate of 60 frames per second. High-end PC owners will also have the option to play Hellblade with an uncapped frame rate and in resolutions up to 4K. The PC version will also support 21:9 ultra widescreen.

Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice is due out for PlayStation 4 and PC on August 8.

《地狱之刃》死亡次数过多会删除存档

  由《鬼泣 DMC》开发组 Ninja Theory 开发的新作《地狱之刃:赛奴娅的献祭》在今日(8月8日)正式发售。除了能领略新游戏内容外,这里需要提醒各位本作设有一个永久死亡系统,也就是说如果玩家死亡次数过多,那么游戏将会删除玩家的存档。|

  游戏中不断地死亡和诅咒会侵蚀女主角赛奴娅,所以当玩家的死亡次数达到一定等级后,会接受惩罚并要求玩家思考之前遇到的每一个困难。这一惩罚将会破坏你的当前存档,游戏的进度和保存内容也会被删除,这时玩家就需要重新开始游戏,所以就需要玩家多多手动存储自己的存档来避免这一惩罚系统了。

  曾制作《DmC:恶魔猎人》开发商 Ninja Theory 宣布《地狱之刃:赛奴雅的献祭》将于 31 日推出虚拟现实(VR)版本,并释出开发过程花絮影片。

  《地狱之刃:赛奴雅的献祭》是款以上古凯尔特人与维京人的世界为背景的动作游戏,故事描述女主角 Senua 是名战士,她遭遇到海盗入侵惨剧后心灵留下了创伤,在她脑中不自觉会听到声音,而有着强烈执念。

  游戏 PC、PS4、Xbox One 版本已陆续上市,近日官方宣布推出 VR 版本,玩家将可透过更沉浸式的体验深入 Senua 内心。

  《地狱之刃:赛奴雅的献祭》VR 版本预定 7 月 31 日登场,支持 HTC Vive 和 Oculus Rift 装置。

《地狱之刃:塞娜的献祭》将推出PS4 Xbox One 实体盒装版!12月4日全球发售


  游戏开发商Ninja Theory今日宣布,将为旗下广受好评的动作冒险游戏《地狱之刃:塞娜的献祭(Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice)》推出实体盒装版,售价29.99美元,面向PS4和Xbox One平台,12月4日全球发售。PS4盒装版将由独立游戏发行商505 Games负责发行,而Xbox One盒装版则将由微软发行。

  《地狱之刃:塞娜的献祭》自发售以来,在全球吸引了超过100万粉丝。游戏的主角Senua是一名心灵受到重创的凯尔特战士,为追寻她死去爱人的灵魂,她一路追踪至北欧炼狱。开发团队与神经系统科学家及饱受精神疾病困扰的人们联袂打造,《地狱之刃:塞娜的献祭》将带玩家深入她的内心。

  《地狱之刃:塞娜的献祭》斩获了5项2018 BAFTA游戏大奖,其中包括最佳英国游戏奖、最佳艺术成就奖、超越娱乐奖、最佳表演者和最佳音频效果奖。游戏在2017 Game Awards荣获最佳音频设计奖、最佳表演者与最佳游戏影响奖。



A physical edition of Ninja Theory’s Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice will be released for PlayStation 4 an Xbox One on December 4 for $29.99 / £24.99. 505 Games will publish the PlayStation 4 version, while Ninja Theory parent company Microsoft will publish the Xbox One version.

Since first launched, Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice has taken over a million fans worldwide on a journey with Senua, a Celtic warrior who embarks on a haunting vision quest to save the soul of her dead lover from Viking hell. Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice was awarded the winner of five 2018 BAFTA Games Awards, including Best British Game, Best Artistic Achievement, Best Game Beyond Entertainment, Best Performer and Best Audio Achievement. 《地狱之刃:塞娜的献祭》成立「塞娜基金」 支持心理健康导师培训

  日前,《地狱之刃:塞娜的献祭(Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice)》开发商Ninja Theory成立了「塞娜基金」,旨在支持心理健康导师的培训。

  「塞娜基金」是Ninja Theory和剑桥康复学院东部合作创建,其基金将用于资助Head to Toe慈善机构,并未学生提供每年在该组织下培训成为心理健康导师的机会。

  为了庆祝该基金的成立,Ninja Theory还发布了一段25分钟的视频,用以解释该工作室如何与精神学家以及拥有幻听经验的患者合作,在游戏中创造真实的精神疾病表现。
